In a Galaxy Far, Far Away…

…There was a plan, which should always be the first step in content marketing, including social media marketing.

Before you really launch your social media strategy, you need to make sure you have answers to some important questions, including:

  • Are you looking to increase sales or do you just want to create visibility for your brand?
  • Will you extend your customer service efforts into the social media space?
  • What do you hope to accomplish?

Once you are able to answer these questions, you’re ready for the next step.

May the Platform Be With You

Every social media platform has a purpose. And not every business needs to be on every platform.

You’ll want to thoughtfully consider whether a platform is appropriate for your brand based on your target audience, your products and services, and your mission.

Think of it in simple terms:

  • Facebook = Community
  • Twitter = Quick Impact
  • Instagram = Aesthetic Appeal
  • LinkedIn = B2B Networking
  • Google = Brand Building

Rather than trying your hand at all social media platforms available, choose one or two or even three that make the most sense for your business. If needed, you can later adjust which platforms you’re on, leaving some and adding others.

You also want to make sure you’re creating unique content across the platforms, for the very reasons we outlined above about how the platforms differ. Instagram, for example, is a very visual platform, so the images you select are the key piece of your content and should be paired with snappy captions and strategic hashtags to garner attention.

On the other hand, a platform like Twitter is meant for especially fast consumption—even faster than the rest of social media. So posts there need to be especially short and snappy, and inclusive of hashtags that will best capture your target audience’s organic attention.

Build Your Jedi Legion

Now that you know the social media platforms you are going to be working with, you want to start focusing on interacting, engaging and building relationships with your target audience.

In other words, you do not want to be a stormtrooper.

Rather, you want to show the human side of your brand and business. You want to be positive and kind with your post copy, as well as develop a personality that your target audience will appreciate and want to follow!

The last thing you want to do is go to the dark side. While a robust content strategy for social media will include posting curated content that’s related to your brand and even news items that deal with your local community, you want to be certain that you’re choosing items that are positive in nature and/or presenting them in a way that’s positive to your audience.

Be authentic. Be you—meaning you as a business. When you are true to you, your target audience is going to appreciate it, and it will bring them in, as well as make them want to bring your friends in, too!

To make sure that your content marketing is hitting its mark and garnering engagement, it is important to focus on community. When you have a person respond to a post, answer back as soon as possible. When you are involved in local events, go LIVE on Instagram or Facebook to get people as excited as you are about being a part of the community!

Don’t go all Hans “Solo.” You need to interact with your target audience as much as they interact with you! So, like, follow and share, especially when it comes to those who follow your social media pages and other important people within your community.

Choose Your Visuals Wisely

There is a reason Darth Vader isn’t on Instagram. Who is going to like a dark and/or blurry photo? No one!

You need to make sure you are using compelling visuals in your social media content.

We mentioned above that Instagram is a very visual platform, meaning that image and video selection for that platform is especially important. But remember also that images are a key part of the strategy for most social media networks, because they capture the attention of readers quickly.

So you want to select images and other visually distinctive content carefully for all your social media content. A well-curated image paired with distinctive copy is also more likely to capture your audience.
