How to Set and Crush Your Goals for Social Media Marketing

The team at Social Joey couldn’t agree more with Tony Robbins: “Setting goals is the first step to turning the invisible into the visible.” No one ever made a living by hoping for success and not having a measurable plan of attack to see it become a reality. However, many business owners view their social media efforts this way: throw something at the wall and pray it sticks. Our team of content and ad strategists has a clear vision in mind for every client in order to squeeze the most success from each campaign and we begin with the same structure each time.

Set Your Goals

Declare your purpose. Where do you want to be and when? Where do you ultimately want to see your business? How long do you want it to take? Remember, velocity is the measure of the speed of the object in a specific direction; you’ll go nowhere fast without a focus.

Use concrete descriptors. Quantifiable data is imperative for benchmarks. Make sure your goals indicate your desired outcome in explicit terms: We want to see a 25% increase in Facebook followers after our ad campaign finishes on the last day of the month. OR We need 600 more retweets over the course of the next three weeks.

Establish your audience. Everyone wants to build a brand that focuses on customer retention but what exactly is it that will help you get there? If your business is B2C, Facebook or Twitter may be the best platforms for you. If your business is B2B, LinkedIn and Google+ may be the better route. Discuss this with a marketing expert to make sure you have the greatest chance of your message resounding with the right audience.

Be honest and realistic about your objectives. Sure, you would love to set a goal of complete world domination in your industry or category, but unless it is a tangible target, you will most likely end up only discouraged. Nothing will change unless you have a challenge, but make sure it is a stretch for your business, not a sure-fire setup for failure.

Crush Them

Prioritize. What is essential to achieving your goals and what has to happen first? The tools you’ll need to get you there are half the battle.

  1. Asking your friends and family to give you a shoutout on Facebook or Twitter is a great first step, but it can’t be your last.

  2. Host a giveaway. Try creating what we call a “Like & Share” campaign. This campaign encourages users to like and share your post as entry for your giveaway. Giveaways are fun and inexpensive and a great way to give back to your community. We’ve had clients give away tickets to football games, free haircuts, Yeti Coolers and much more. The options are limitless they are a foolproof way to get followers to your page. This boost in organic traffic to your Facebook page can really help grow your social media presence.

  3. Run an ad on Facebook that helps your business stand out. Your assigned ad strategist knows the best practices when choosing the type of Facebook ad that will work best for your goals. Want to increase likes on the page? Try a Likes campaign. Want increased traffic to your website? A Website Clicks campaign would be great. Have a coupon you think could drive foot traffic to your location? Facebook Offers is definitely something you should be utilizing. Thanks to the extensive targeting capabilities your ads strategist has access to on Facebook, we can craft the perfect audience to make sure your ads are seen by people who will be interested in your business. So you don’t have to worry if your advertisements are being seen by the right people.

  4. Create a blog that will get people talking. Establishing yourself as a leading industry expert is the most effective way to build an online presence. You’ll manage to gain people’s trust (and ultimately, their money) without asking for it.

  5. Engage with your customers and be transparent on social. Your business has a tone, voicing and personality; it should be communicated in a clear and obvious way through your social media while establishing your presence as a trustworthy and expert resource. Use exciting and attractive methods for your communication. Video content on Facebook is more likely to get engagement than any other kind of content. A recent study found that 75 percent of consumers are inspired to purchase by image and video content seen online.

Be accountable. Although Social Joey is doing the ‘heavy lifting’ for your social media by providing daily content and ads, make sure you are doing your part to help make your social amazing. You can help us by clearly communicating your goals, providing us with excellent resources and imagery to make your page stand out and continuing to post what we call “heart content” on your page (anything personal about your business such as employee of the month winners, new products, pictures with regular customers, etc.).

What can help you stay on track? It’s fantastic to see a small bit of progress and think that moving in the right direction is good enough, but winning the battle of increased sales doesn’t mean success in the war of long-term customer loyalty. Good news is great, but don’t let it distract you from the big picture: progress only counts when you’ve gotten where you want to be, not when you’re on your way.

Celebrate Your Success

Enjoy the fruits of your labor. The harder you work for something, the better it feels when you achieve it. The problem that many of us have is that we casually and passively acknowledge that we have reached our goal and then it’s on to the next thing. Take time to appreciate how hard you’ve worked and congratulate your team!

Repeat.

Review and adjust. If your campaign didn’t perform as well as you would have liked this month, communicate with our team and let us help explain the reasons why. We are ready and willing to collaborate with you to create a plan that helps your business succeed. How did you progress in the last month? If what worked at the beginning of your campaign is starting to taper off, try something else. If it worked great, figure out what we did right and multiply that! Be stubborn about achieving your goals, but be flexible about your method realizing them. What works for some doesn’t work for others, but we can help you find your sweet spot.
